The 2009-2010 Tertianship Program of the Jesuit Conference of East Asia-Oceania: March 2010

The purpose of these three days is to gather the fruits of the Tertianship and to prepare the return home for mission. These are days of quiet peace and grateful prayer.

The Long Retreat has been the dominant experience of the Tertianship. It is in the Spiritual Exercises that we find the core of our charism and identity - looking at Him. Hence, the following questions might be helpful for consideration during these days of prayer:

What does it mean for me to live the graces of the Four Weeks of the Spiritual Exercises in my day-to-day life as a Companion of Jesus? As I go back over my experience of the Long Retreat, what was for me the particular grace(s) of each week, and what do these graces mean for the life that lies ahead of me as a Jesuit priest or brother?

Most of February – about three weeks – is set aside for elective activities. These weeks are normally spent within the

Philippines

. The elective chosen is aimed at helping the tertian achieve the general goal of Tertianship – the schola affectus in the context of a deeper commitment to Jesuit life.

The tertians are encouraged to engage in something that is not the same as their ordinary work or that is different from the situations that have already become very familiar to them. Hence, this month can be a time to help broaden horizons with something new, different. It is also possible, however, to use this time to expand the tertian’s experience in view of the ministry he will be doing in the future.

For some, this may be the last opportunity for deepening their knowledge of things Jesuit (such as the Spiritual Exercises, the Institute, Jesuit history, etc.). In this case, the tertian could stay at the Tertianship base at the Loyola House of Studies and use this time for some personal study and reading.

The tertians chose to spend their month doing the following elective activities:

Graziano Calci: tribal minorities apostolate in Zamboanguita and Miarayon in the Diocese of Malaybalay, Bukidnon

Bambang Genturjati: Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (SEARSOLIN) and the Manresa Farm at Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City

Eric Eusebio: Chaplaincy at the Xavier University High School, Cagayan de Oro City

Louis Catalan and Paul Malvaux: Pastoral ministry at the Immaculate Conception Parish, Culion, Palawan

Bryan Lobo: Research in Ignatian Spirituality and Pastoral Ministry in Asipulo, Mountain Province

Eko Budi Santoso: Chaplaincy at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), Manila

Cesar Sosa: Pastoral Ministry at Conner, Apayao of the Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk

Tri Dinh: Study of the Spiritual Exercises and the Constitutions and Immersion in Navotas
